The Upcoming Hulu Live Streaming TV Service: What We Know

The new Hulu live streaming TV service is set to arrive soon. Here's what we know about this latest subscription-based service that wants to find a place in your living room and on your mobile devices.

It's been an exciting time for subscription-based internet-TV thanks to the recent arrivals of PlayStation Vue and DirecTV Now on iOS and tvOS devices. That excitement will soon spill into 2017 when Hulu's live TV service comes online.

As the new year has begun, we've heard more details about Hulu's new service, which is expected to launch in the coming weeks.

Price and content

According to Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins, the new service will be priced competitively starting at under $40 a month for a skinny pack. Hulu has yet to announce all the channels included in this plan. However, some details have leaked in recent weeks.

Hulu recently announced an agreement with CBS, the most popular network in the United States. Of the three major streaming service available to consumers, only PlayStation Vue offers any content from CBS. And that's only in a limited number of major cities in the U.S.

As Brent Dirks noted in November, content from FOX and Disney are also expected to launch on the service.

Here's the complete list of channel additions: FOX and ABC; Fox Sports networks such as the Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 and BTN; ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN-SEC and ESPN 3; Fox Regional Sports Networks across dozens of key national markets; Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior; Fox News and Fox Business; Freeform; FX, FXX and FXM, and National Geographic, and Nat Geo Wild.

Previously it was announced that Hulu had inked a deal with Time Warner to include TNT, TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, truTV, Boomerang, and Turner Classic Movies on the service.

Hulu also signed a deal to bring exclusive Disney movies to the service.

Another guarantee: Every Hulu plan will include the company's current video-on-demand plan, which is priced at $8 per month.

Competitors

Of the current subscription-based internet-TV plans, Dish's Sling TV offers the least expensive price of entry. For $20 per month, Sling Orange subscribers receive 30 "best of live TV channels," including CNN, ESPN, and Disney.

Meanwhile, for $35 per month, early DirecTV Now subscribers have access to 100 channels as part of the company's "Go Big" plan. After this month, that plan will cost $60 per month. Current PlayStation Vue plans start at $30 per month.

DVR

The Hulu live streaming TV service will include a cloud DVR service, similar to the one offered on PlayStation Vue. This is a big deal since it allows customers to view previously aired content with ease.

Sling TV is expected to add this feature to its service in the coming months. Right now, it's being beta tested by select subscribers who use Sling TV on Roku boxes. Meanwhile DirecTV Now currently lacks a DVR component, although it has recently introduced the ability to rewind TV up to 72 hours.

Conclusion

We'll continue to follow the Hulu live streaming TV service as it gets closer to becoming a reality.
